G4S Security Partnership with American Electric Power
Development of a Full-Spectrum, Unique Security Partnership
American Electric Power (AEP) ranks among the nation’s largest generators of electricity, owning nearly 38,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the Ubited States. AEP also owns the nation’s largest electricity transmission system, a nearly 39,000-mile network that includes 765 kilovolt extra-high voltage transmission lines, more than all other U.S. transmission systems combined.
AEP’s transmission system directly or indirectly serves about 10 percent of the electricity demand in the Easter Interconnection, the interconnected transmission system that covers 38 eastern and central U.S. states and eastern Canada. It also serves approximately 11 percent of the electricity demand in ERCOT, the transmission system that covers much of Texas.
The unique partnership between G4S Technology (formerly Adesta) and AEP began in 2005 when AEP began researching security solution options. They sought an experienced systems integrator who understood the products, solutions, and implementation process while realizing the best value. G4S Technology was ultimately chosen to engineer, design and install upgrades to AEP’s physical security measures and intrusion detection systems at several sites.
In 2007, the companies reconnected as G4S Technology was chosen to consolidate all security systems with a centralized command and control application. Today G4S Technology operates as an AEP integration partner by advising on and implementing ongoing security improvements, enhancements and maintenance.
With G4S Technology’s help, AEP has perimeter security and assessment capability and a consolidated situational awareness command and control system for all security information across the entire organization, and is able to manage responses on a regional and national basis.
Technical aspects of the project include:
- Perimeter intrusion detection
- Enterprise-wide video management applications for various types and distributed facilities
- Enterprise command and control solution consolidating all security information from various video applications
- An access control system
- Intrusion-detection systems
- Burglar-alarm systems
- Any type of necessary sensors
