Assigned to the South Florida Regional Transit Association (SFRTA) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, CPO Ruiz enforces safety rules and regulations, addresses security concerns and safety hazards, and provides assistance to employees, passengers and the general public.
Pedro Ruiz’ passion for safety goes beyond his work on the job site. While off duty on Dec. 16, 2016, CPO Ruiz and a Broward Sheriff Deputy Sergeant were driving on I-95 when a vehicle in flames prompted the two to take action. Ruiz intervened and used his training to quickly address the situation. Ruiz and the deputy broke the vehicle window and pulled the victim to safety. Officer Ruiz then administered CPR to the victim, who had no pulse. Thanks to Officer Ruiz, the individual regained consciousness and survived.
The SFRTA recognized Officer Ruiz’ heroic actions with a Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes the actions of frontline SFRTA-affiliated employees who provide assistance that far exceeds their responsibilities to those in need. The Distinguished Service Award presented to Pedro Ruiz represents the second time this honor has been bestowed by the SFRTA.
