Walking Up and Down the Stairs - Joint Damage

No matter how well a stairwell is built or how well it is maintained, all is for naught if our feet only touch every other stair.

The young and restless and those still invincible may skip down the stairs and take double steps on their way up because, they feel great. But remember, except for a trauma injury, most hip, knee and ankle injuries are chronic. Again, that means the injury happened little by little over a long period of time. Some of unfortunate aspects of a chronic injury are:

  • Chronic injuries are difficult to diagnose as to what really caused them. A twist or fall at age 40 can be devastating to someone who has not taken care of their hip, knee or ankle joints.
  • Slips, trips and falls become more frequent and cause more damage.
  • A simple pleasure such as walking the dog or playing with grandkids becomes a painful chore. Why do you think there are so many television commercials promoting pain relievers?
  • Don’t blame it on arthritis. Arthritis is in part caused by chronic joint injuries with diet and exercise following close behind.

Lessons Learned: Take care of yourself when you’re young, you’ll thank yourself later on. If that ship has sailed, mitigate the damage and start today. Good posture, good technique and take your time.
